A GMT solves a problem most travelers don't actually have. A jumping hour complication solves the one nearly everyone does.
GMT and jumping hour complications are often treated as two variations of the same “travel watch” concept, as if they're interchangeable. They're not, and once you see what each one is actually built to solve, it's a lot easier to tell which one you've been reaching for. A "true GMT" watch relies on a jump mechanism internally, while a jumping hour complication has nothing to do with tracking a second time zone at all. Here's the distinction, and why most travelers land on the same side of it.
What a GMT watch actually does
A GMT watch tracks a second time zone alongside your home or local time, usually through a 24-hour hand and a rotating bezel. It exists for one reasons so you don't have to do time-zone math in your head. There are two common versions, and the difference between them is the real source of most of the confusion online.
Caller GMT (also called office GMT). The 24-hour hand is linked to the main hour hand and moves with it. You set a second time zone once, using the bezel, and it stays fixed relative to your home time. This version is built for people who call or check in on one other time zone regularly, a client, an office, a family member, without actually traveling there.
True GMT (also called traveler or flyer GMT). Here, the local hour hand can be adjusted independently, in one-hour increments, without stopping the watch or affecting the minute hand. Land in a new time zone, jump the hour hand forward or back, and your GMT hand keeps quietly tracking home time underneath. This is the version built for people who actually change time zones, not just call into one.
That independent, one-hour-at-a-time adjustment is exactly where the terminology collides with jumping hour watches, the local hour hand on a true GMT "jumps" from one position to the next. It's a fair mechanism to describe as a jump, but it's a different complication from what watch collectors call a jumping hour watch. It's also, worth noting, a fairly specific need: a GMT only earns its keep if you're regularly tracking a second, fixed location not just traveling.
What a jumping hour complication actually does
A jumping hour complication has nothing to do with tracking a second location. Instead of an hour hand, the time is shown through a small window, or sometimes a printed set of numerals, that snaps instantly from one hour to the next rather than sweeping gradually like a normal hand. It's a display mechanism, not a travel tool, its entire job is legibility, answering the one question every traveler actually asks dozens of times a day: what time is it, right now, where I am.
VOXEL's own take on this, built into MÉRIDION VX01-E, pushes the idea one step further: instead of jumping once an hour, the display jumps twice a day, alternating between a familiar 12-hour format from 1:00 AM to 12:59 PM and a 24-hour format from 1:00 PM to 12:59 AM. It solves a smaller, far more common problem than a GMT does, not "what time is it somewhere else," but "is it 8 in the morning or 8 at night," answered without a sub-dial, a second hand, or any math. It's the complication built for the question almost every traveler actually has, rather than the one a small minority does.
So which one actually fits you
For most travelers, the honest answer is the jumping hour. Not because GMTs aren't well built, they are, but because most people who buy one aren't actually solving a second-time-zone problem. They're solving a "my watch is hard to read" problem, and paying for a complication that doesn't touch it.
A GMT earns its keep in a narrower set of cases, you regularly need to know the time in one specific other city (family, an office, a market you trade in) and check it often enough that a fixed caller GMT is genuinely useful, or you cross time zones so frequently that resetting a single hour hand mid-flight becomes a feature you'll use every trip, in which case a true GMT is worth the extra cost.
Everyone else which is to say, most travelers are better served by a watch that's simply unmistakable to read wherever they land. If you've ever glanced at a 24-hour dial and had to count marks to figure out if it's evening yet, or squinted at small numerals crammed around a single busy dial, that's a readability problem, not a time-zone problem, and no amount of GMT complication fixes it. A jumping 12/24 display does, directly, every single day, without asking you to also track a city you don't actually need to track.
Most people who buy a GMT for travel and don't actually need to track a second time zone would be just as well served, day to day, by a watch that's simply easier to read at a glance, which is the whole reason the jumping-hour category exists in the first place.
